The Power of AI in Speeding Claims Processing

ControlExpert used both computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) to develop an end-to-end claims management solution for insurance companies and their claimants. The solution lets customers and claimants notify the insurer about their claim, take photos of their vehicle in the event of an accident, and provide documentation needed for settlement while detecting and reducing insurance fraud.

The solution automatically classifies the content of images, such as vehicle photos or documentation (e.g., license or registration). ControlExpert uses vision AI to identify vehicle information like make, model, color, and license plate. Based on images of vehicle damage, ControlExpert also developed AI models to segment visible vehicle parts and precisely detect the severity of the damage, generating a detailed description of the damage as well as cost estimation for repairs.  For the solution to accurately assess the damage, ControlExpert developed AI-based fraud prevention that analyzes and detects manipulated images.

Insurance companies process millions of non-standardized documentation each day, which can be very time-consuming for claim agents.  Using NLP, AI models can extract and analyze data from documentation, including invoices, appraisals, and emails, to provide a decision about claim payments.

Why NVIDIA AI Enterprise?

Building an AI Solution for End-to-End Claims Management

ControlExpert turned to NVIDIA AI to develop an end-to-end claims management solution. NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, combined with NVIDIA GPUs, delivers the accelerated compute and enterprise-grade security, stability, and support needed to power this solution on ControlExpert’s on-premises AI infrastructure.

To process and settle a claim in a day, the solution required near-real-time responses. CPU-only solutions didn’t provide the performance needed, so ControlExpert leveraged NVIDIA’s accelerated computing with NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs and NVIDIA AI Enterprise to power their solution. Utilizing NVIDIA technology, ControlExpert’s solution is able to recognize 71 vehicle parts with less than one second of processing time. Through the integration of AI-based fraud detection, ControlExpert achieves a 95% accuracy rate in detecting manipulated images within three seconds. The incorporation of large language models (LLMs) enabled ControlExpert to analyze varied claim documentation in less than three seconds on average.

ControlExpert also used the tools and frameworks included with NVIDIA AI Enterprise to streamline AI development. The team of data scientists at ControlExpert used Pytorch to develop and train computer vision and NLP models. ControlExpert is also integrating NVIDIA NIM on their platform to easily deploy generative AI models. By leveraging NVIDIA optimized AI software, ControlExpert delivers enhanced capabilities for real-time damage and repair cost estimates, automated claims, and fraud detection.

NVIDIA AI Enterprise allows ControlExpert to do more with less by accelerating time-to-deployment while satisfactorily responding to customers in real time. NVIDIA’s full-stack solution reduced the complexity of ControlExpert’s AI infrastructure and provided the AI tools and frameworks necessary for their data scientists to focus on model development and their software engineers to focus on serving models to deployment.

In addition, NVIDIA AI Enterprise provided the security and stability that ControlExpert required for production. With regular security patches, API stability, long-term support branches, and NVIDIA Enterprise Support, ControlExpert can confidently deploy their solution to production and provide customers with 24/7 service while meeting tight service-level agreements (SLAs). With the success of this solution, settle claims in near real time.

Generative AI and large language models (LLMs) have given ControlExpert the ability to scale into new markets while enhancing security around their core solution–a key benefit of adopting AI. Looking ahead, ControlExpert plans to leverage the multi-language capabilities of LLMs to expand their solution internationally. ControlExpert will be able to use their current infrastructure, running on NVIDIA AI Enterprise, for these new generative AI use cases.
