G-SYNC At CES 2020: 360Hz Esports Monitors Unveiled, Mini-LEDs Come Into Focus, LG 2020 OLED TVs Announced as G-SYNC Compatible BFGDs, and Over Two-Dozen New G-SYNC Compatible Gaming Monitors Supported

NVIDIA G-SYNC pioneered variable refresh rate gaming in 2013, and to this day delivers the very best display experiences across all price points and categories. In November, LG became the first TV manufacturer to add G-SYNC Compatible support for their big-screen TVs, enabling GeForce gamers to enjoy stunning visuals and smooth variable refresh rate gaming on LG’s spectacular OLEDs.

At CES 2020, LG has unveiled a suite of new big-screen OLED TVs, all 12 of which will be G-SYNC Compatible, with models ranging in size from 48 inches to a whopping 88 inches.

With G-SYNC and LG’s technology delivering low latency and smooth, responsive gaming, and their TVs getting ever larger, we’re classifying LG’s new 2020 TVs as Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGDs), giving gamers more options for smooth, high-quality VRR living room gaming.

In 2019, we announced that we were working on next-gen Mini-LED G-SYNC ULTIMATE gaming monitors, which would improve every aspect of previously-released G-SYNC ULTIMATE monitors, delivering an even better experience.

This week at CES 2020, our partners at ACER and ASUS are showing the latest version of this display technology, which has been enhanced and improved since its announcement. Previously, Mini-LED was to feature 576 local dimming zones for HDR, improving contrast, minimizing haloing, and improving color accuracy and overall picture quality.

This was a 50% improvement over the 384 zones offered by our first G-SYNC ULTIMATE monitors, which were themselves a massive leap over previously-released HDR PC displays. But now, there are an unprecedented 1152 local dimming zones on the ASUS and ACER 32” 144Hz 4K G-SYNC ULTIMATE gaming monitors, vastly improving picture quality.

Furthermore, we’ve tweaked and improved contrast, boosted HDR brightness to a peak of 1400 nits, and enhanced our DCI-P3 color accuracy.

This time last year, we unveiled G-SYNC Compatible, a new category of gaming monitors that offered a baseline variable refresh rate (VRR) experience with a sufficiently-wide VRR range, and were guaranteed to deliver a flawless G-SYNC experience straight out of the box. By introducing G-SYNC Compatible, we ensured that gamers could easily find and buy a good gaming monitor with the knowledge that it’ll work well, improving their gaming.

Since then, we've introduced support for more and more monitors via our Game Ready Drivers, across all major resolutions, on monitors big and small, with refresh rates of up to 240Hz. And now, we’re announcing support for a further 25 G-SYNC Compatible gaming monitors and displays, taking us to 90 displays total.

Of the 25, 7 gaming monitors are enabled in today’s new Game Ready Driver, along with support for the 2019 LG Z9 88” BFGD, which users will also need to install a new firmware for via LG’s website or the TV’s built-in firmware update tool.

Support for the LG 2020 OLED Big Format Gaming Displays and other G-SYNC Compatible gaming monitors will follow later in the year, so keep your eye on our driver article news feed for word of their release.
