Hi guys dont know if anyone else with a Quad SLI setup is experiencing this but I would like to know. Bascially i've installed TF2 last night and have been getting a crach to desktop with a Runtime error. I have no idea why as the game runs fine before the crash. I think maybe the games dont like quad sli as I saw it in some other forums.
I would say it would be a problem with TF2 not being optimized for Quad-SLI. One thing to remember is the Source engine predates SLI. It has taken driver improvements on Nvidia's end and patch work on Valves end to get it to work right.
If this is the case I hope Nvidia is aware and is working with Valve to figure out how to fix this. I didn't spend 1200$ so I can't play my favorite games. Anyway has anyone else experienced a runtime error with quad sli & TF2 ?
They probably are. But, the bigger question is why are you even using Quad-SLI on a 4 year old engine in the first place? Just use the one dual card for the game. You probably wouldn't see any real performance gains from Quad-SLI with that game unless your using a 30" LCD at 2560 x 1600 res. with 32x AA and 16x Anio. If you really want to see something, then buy and install Crysis and run it at it's highest settings. Post the rest of system specs too, that may shed some light as well.

Actually the big question is. Does disabling SLI/MUlti GPU fix it? Does it work with a single 9800GX2? Even if the engine is old he shouldnt be crashing. Chris

Your are right of course Chris. I guess a red flag went up when I saw he more or less purchased his Quad-SLI rig to play TF2, and is disappointed in the results.

Right, but in disabling the second card and running TF2 does it still crash? It very well could be a driver related issue. Or an issue on Valves end ( I doubt it though). Why don't you go ahead and post your rigs specs so we can rule out the possibility of it being a hardware issue?

Ok so I disabled SLI and TF2 worked flawlessly. So it is definatly an issue with Quad SLI. Now it's a matter of figuring out if it's the source engine or a driver issue. Remember i'm using the latest WHQL certified drivers 175.16

try another game - if succesfull not a driver issue, if not then welcome to nvidia - you are having the same problems 80%of us are having.

I dont know how many times i've mentioned it in this post already but i've tried everything else and this issue is only with Source based games.

Well then haven't you answered your own question? Quad sli = source not working with current driver - no optimizations?

Ace, I had no issue with HL2, EP1 and 2 with SLi on with 2 ultras and Vista 64, but TF2 would not even load with sli on, soon as i turn SLi off and it would work no issue. Try switching Sli off and rebooting then trying TF2, TF2 also has some issues with MP on some vista machines other source games don't. It may be worth trying a roll back older driver for TF2 if you plan to play it non stop for 14 days ;) Many people claim 169.44 preffered TF2 in vista 64 with 8800, not sure about 9800 GX2. The run time error with sli on and 8800 ultras was the game would crash on laod. No other source title does/did with SLI just TF2. I have the retail version single boxset of TF2 run from steam. Might be worth trying some differnet settings in NCP and contol through global for TF2.

I've got an slightly older rig with 2x8800 GTS's and TF2 works fine. The runtime error only happens after a few minutes of gameplay on the Quad SLI. If I disable it and have it run off the one card only which is still normal SLI as it's 2 GFX card's in one it works flawlessly. This happens with TF2, DOD & all other source based games. Every other pc game I own works flawlessly. It's pointing more towards the source engine but it could still be that the drivers for QUAD are still infantial and might be fixed via future drivers which I hope but I think it's just good to point out that there is an issue with this.
