Sorry, this reply was meant for you:
Am I nuts, or does that article not mention Nvidia Surround at all? I don't see anything suggesting that it shouldn't work.
What I believe is happening is that you're surpassing the maximum pixel rate of the GPU when linked in surround mode @ 240hz.
For example: 4k/240hz= 1,990,656,000 (*2)= 3,981,312,000 pixels displayed per second
Which is the same output as running 2x 8k/120hz, in which the 3090 was not designed for.
When the displays are in independent operation; they're not refreshing at the same/exact time unlike when configured in Surround mode.
There's also an issue where M$ recognizes DSC as a custom resolution on some panels which NV surround is not compatible with.
These issues should be alleviated with the launch of DP 2.x
It would actually be equivalent to running 2x 8K/60Hz or 1x 8K/120Hz (7680 * 4320 * 60 =1,990,656,000 * 2 = 3,981,312,000), not 2x 8K/120Hz. As for your explanation as to why they work with Surround disabled: it sounds like you fundamentally misunderstand how video output works within the context of video cards (at least Nvidia ones; I can’t speak for AMD’s architecture). Independent video outputs aren’t “interlaced” in any way that would reduce bandwidth requirements, and Nvidia Surround/frame synchronization in general shouldn’t impose any additional bandwidth requirements on the video card.
First, I meant to respond to MrInfinit3's reply. They linked a DSC documentation page as evidence that it doesn't support Nvidia Surround, but I see no mention of Surround within it.
Second, what do you mean by "DSC on ONE"? In case it wasn't clear, my intention is to get Surround working with DSC enabled on *both* monitors, not just one of them. (I edited my post to reflect that more clearly.)
.
I do not know but here are 2 things to try.
Set both monitors to 60Hz.
Put then In Surround at that Refresh.
Then you should be able to get DSC working as long as you are at that refresh.
Here is my theory....
DSC = 2 Headers and the card has 4 total.
So (2) Monitors in DSC = (4)headers in use.
But 240Hz = (4)4K@ 60hz
So, by dropping the Refresh to 60hz there should be ample bandwidth to operate the monitor.
If it works, then start bumping the Refresh by 30Hz to find where it does not.
Second item to try....
Create a Custom Resolution of 3840x4320 (thats (2)3840x2160(fake 4K), not (2)4096x2160(real 4K)) using the NVCP and then try again with toasyX CRU
Once you put the monitors into Surround, apply the Custom Resolution to it.
.
Hi, thanks for your reply.
As for setting the refresh rate to 60Hz, I am unable to select anything other than 180Hz or 240Hz in the Surround configuration menu. This is regardless of the refresh rate the monitors are currently set to.
As for setting a custom resolution, I’m not totally sure what you’re suggesting. Are you saying I should try to set *each* monitor to 2x its actual resolution? In either case, the “Customize” button is disabled in NVCP, I suspect because DSC is enabled.
As for CRU, it comes with the following disclaimer:
> NVIDIA's driver currently ignores EDID overrides when Display Stream Compression (DSC) is active. Please report this issue to NVIDIA.
So unfortunately that’s not an option either.
.
No on the 2x Monitor Resolution.

I don't see what you hope to accomplish with this test. Even if I could get an EDID override created by CRU working with DSC, it's not like you can output 3840x4320/240Hz with a single DP1.4 connection anyway. Could you please explain what the goal of this is, and also what you would expect to happen if I successfully configure a custom resolution/refresh rate that neither my monitor nor DP1.4 supports?
.
It was my understanding the DSC increases the bandwidth of the DP 1.4 from 32.4GB/s to closer to 48.2GB/s via its compression.
Since the 32.4 should be enough for the 4K UHD @ 120Hz, this would allow SOURROUND with (2)4K monitors @ 120Hz PLUS.
But, Nevermind, Obviously Im an idiot.
.
I have an RTX 3090 and two MSI MPG 321URXs, and I have yet to successfully enable Nvidia Surround without disabling DSC in the monitors' settings. To be clear, the 3090 has no issue driving both of these monitors simultaneously at 4K/240Hz/HDR (with DSC enabled on both monitors, of course), but enabling Nvidia Surround with these settings causes both screens to go black, even between restarts. The only way I've discovered to regain any video output is to disconnect one monitor while the computer is powered off to "force" the graphics card out of Surround mode. (This doesn't always work; it consistently takes me ~3 blind restarts as of late, alternating which monitor is connected each time.)
If I turn DSC off on both monitors, Nvidia Surround as well as the monitors themselves are limited to 120Hz, but it otherwise seems to work just fine. I can't imagine there's truly no way to get this setup working at 240Hz, so... does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, since I know I'm going to get this question: no, I do not have any other monitors plugged in.
