It’s correct that Ggoogle is moving away from it and it’s correct SHIELD doesn’t have hardware support for it. We spent about 6 months trying to get a cpu version of it going which would be limited to YouTube non content protected streams but we ended up with a limitation of 1440 on most streams, 1080 on same unfortunately only 720p for some others. We put the effort on hold to invest the time into other areas of SHIELD for the time being given the effort vs limitations it would have not making sense. It’s unlikely we’ll come back to it now given the direction Google is moving.
Truth is that even Google is moving away from the VPx codec, and they already announced there would be no VP10. Whatever development had been done got pushed to the joint-venture AV1 codec.
Who knows, maybe the switch to AV1 got hinted at Google partners so Nvidia decided to forego the codec entirely.
So what in the world is with it with vp9 profile 2. I mean it has been in the top 2 or 3 known requirements for years. Nvidia can build in some wizz bang AI upscalling magic but can’t provide vp9 profile 2 support in a brand new device that cost almost $200 but my FireTV Stick 4k that I paid $25 can do it no problem...what am I missing?
