The incredible growth of data traffic and increased adoption of virtualization creates strains on the modern data center. Traditionally, virtual machines relied on software-based communication interfaces such as Virtio to connect with the hypervisor. Although Virtio is significantly more flexible compared to SR-IOV, it can use up to 50% more compute power in the host, thus increasing the total cost of servers and power. To solve these challenges, F5 is accelerating its BIG-IP VE virtualized appliance portfolio by offloading Virtio to NVIDIA BlueField-2 DPUs and ConnectX-6 Dx Ethernet adapters. This software-defined, hardware-accelerated solution significantly decreases the compute power required while maintaining the flexibility Virtio offers. We'll present the F5-NVIDIA joint solution, demonstrating the benefits of reduced CPU utilization while achieving high performance using Virtio. We'll discuss solution availability and feedback from customer trials.
