More than 1.35 million people die in road crashes each year. These deaths are avoidable, and governments all over the world are resolving to reduce them through their "Vision-Zero" programs. The UN just declared a new "Decade of Action" with the goal of reducing road fatalities by half by 2030. We'll take a technology deep-dive to first show how the lack of technological innovation has failed to lower fatalities over the past 20 years. Then we'll argue that three enabling trends — video-analytics maturity, availability of powerful edge-computing hardware, and proliferation of closed-circuit television cameras — are poised to change traffic enforcement for the better, reducing fatalities and crashes. Then we'll summarize the industry's challenges and show how real-time, edge-based deep-learning systems can tackle them effectively by retrofitting existing camera infrastructure for road safety.
