Build Games in the Cloud: How Tencent Streamlines 3D Content Production With OpenUSD
, Senior Technical Artist, Tencent
We'll give you a view into the process of implementing a new Procedural Content Generation (PCG) and pipeline framework at Tencent, and walk you through the steps of integrating Universal Scene Description (USD) and Omniverse into the existing digital content creations (DCCs), game engines, and the entire production ecosystem.
This project started in 2021, in cooperation with NVIDIA. The intention was to replace the Houdini Engine and all other PCG frameworks at Tencent Games. It was initially motivated by the need to support arbitrary DCCs and game engines instead of only being able to use two specific softwares. And after Omniverse came in, we realized that moving everything online was a good idea, eventually making our PCG tools become cloud services.
Hear about the technical details behind this project as well as the actual practice we're currently experiencing in production. We'll explain why Tencent Games chose to use USD and Omniverse, and how they're setting sail for making games like working in the metaverse.
